The lily of the office...

No this is not a post about my secret crush at work (Hi Jenna!) or anything of that nature. The extraordinarily nice HR lady at work had a few bouquets of lovely pink Lilies in her office today, and I grabbed the camera.

I didn't have my extension tubes with me, so I framed it up as best I could on the 50mm and took a shot.

Lighting was awful so this was shot with the flash and 'the Puffer' for diffusion. It needed some tweaking for colour in post, but that charming pink came through nicely enough.

I also have a line on a gently used EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM Macro lens in town. I think I'll need to sell my Wii to finance the purchase, but I'm stoked about getting a dedicated macro lens. I'm still working on cloning out that power line in the earlier shot of the Canwest building as well.

So, anybody want to buy a Wii? :)

  1. Good luck on the dedicated macro lens! I've got a lens with macro settings (Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG APO Macro Telephoto zoom lens which came with my used camera purchase) but I've not quite figured out how it works yet. I've accidentally gottena few macro shots (none "good" because while I got amazing upclose detail, they were uncomposed as I had no idea how the lens works!).

    PS: Nice lilies.

  2. Hi Jenny,

I know that there are a lot of Macro lenses that have 'close focus' basically, like your Sigma. True Macros will do 1:1 (or 1x) magnification, so basically whatever you are pointing at will be projected, at full size, onto the sensor.

The 60mm is a true 1:1 so I'm pretty stoked about it. I still have to finance it somehow though :D

  3. My husband will, more or less, die when I start trying to buy lenses. I plan to ease him into it with the purchase of a "nifty fifty" for $100 or so. I figure that will be enough sticker shock for my first new lens. :D

  4. I outright told my wife a few days ago that I was realistically looking at $3,500 or so to build up my kit of lenses.

She looked at me and said, "Honestly that's less than I thought."

    I LOVE MY WIFE :D
